Gutta cavat lapidem (the water drop bores through the rock) has been one of the fundamental teachings in my life. However, the strength and the resilience I have experienced since I started collaborating with Smart Medical Aid has lent a different magnitude to this motto. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Iryna Rybinkina, (the CEO of SMART Medical Aid – a Dutch-Ukrainian charity) and her group of volunteers have been providing medical training to combat medics and civilians, delivering tons of medical supplies to hospitals, 87 ambulances, and much more to this country so deeply wounded by the war. I was so proud to contribute as a small drop when, in May 2022 and April 2023, I accompanied them to Dnipro, Kharkiv, Kyiv and Lviv to help.

It is difficult to describe what you feel when you see the destroyed buildings, the wounded children or hear the stories of the medics who risk everything to save the lives of civilians and soldiers.

In this webinar I will share with you some of these stories and introduce our next project – IOLE (Improve Outcome of Laparoscopic surgery by Education). With the support of five other British surgeons, I will deliver a five-days laparoscopic training in Ukraine in November 2023. This project holds a special place in my heart, starting with its name, IOLE, which was my mother’s name. She was an active Red Cross volunteer and an example for many.
